Archaeologists have announced the discovery of what is believed to be the Tomb of St. Nicholas, the figure who inspired the legend of 'Santa Claus.'
The team unearthed a six-foot-long limestone sarcophagus featuring a raised lid and a pitched roof, located approximately six feet beneath the surface near the Church of Saint Nicholas in Turkey.
This sarcophagus was situated within a two-story structure adjacent to the church's southern courtyard.

Currently, the researchers are examining the sarcophagus for any inscriptions that may provide insights into the date and identity of the individual interred within.

"The discovery of a sarcophagus in proximity to the church, which is traditionally associated with his burial site, suggests that we may have located the sacred area we have been seeking," stated Associate Professor Ebru Fatma Findik from Hatay Mustafa Kemal University.

The tomb was located within the remnants of an ancient basilica that was submerged due to rising sea levels in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages.

Historical documentation indicates that shortly thereafter, the Church of Saint Nicholas was constructed atop the original foundation to safeguard the saint's burial site.
It was only recently that archaeologists revealed mosaic and stone flooring from the earlier sanctuary, which ultimately led them to the final resting place of St. Nicholas.
