Scotland's hospitals, currently facing significant challenges, are at risk of being overwhelmed this winter as flu-related admissions have surged to three times the levels recorded last year, nearly doubling within a single week.
A report from Public Health Scotland (PHS) indicated that emergency care admissions rose by 82 percent last week, increasing from 372 to 677.
In comparison, there were only 232 admissions during the same week last year, marking the highest figure reported this winter.
Dr. Sandesh Gulhane, the Scottish Conservative health spokesperson, criticized SNP Health Secretary Neil Gray, stating, "This situation is extremely concerning. This dramatic increase poses a serious threat to our NHS this winter."
Currently, 67 percent of all hospital admissions are attributed to flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or Covid-19. While admissions for RSV and Covid-19 have seen a slight decline, confirmed flu cases have nearly doubled for the fourth consecutive week, rising to 1,483 in the week ending December 15, up from 842 the previous week. The peak number of cases last winter was 824 in the final week of 2023.
A representative from the Royal College of Nursing remarked, "Once again, winter is revealing the severe consequences of inadequate investment in our nursing workforce. The government must demonstrate its commitment to the profession through tangible actions rather than mere rhetoric."
PHS noted that an increase in respiratory illnesses is typical each winter, and flu activity remains "unpredictable."
A spokesperson added, "The data reflects a swift rise in flu cases, similar to the trends observed in 2022-23. It remains uncertain whether this trend will continue or if it will stabilize or decline."
They urged individuals eligible for flu or Covid-19 vaccinations to take advantage of the opportunity, emphasizing that "it is not too late to safeguard yourself and those around you this winter."
The report highlighted that over two-thirds of individuals at risk for flu and more than three-quarters of those at risk for Covid-19 have yet to receive their vaccinations.
Public Health Minister Jenni Minto stated, "We are committed to supporting our health boards in their ongoing response."
