Joe Marler has opened up on why he retired:
On Sunday night, upon returning to camp, I had reached a decision. It was not a hasty choice. My daughter, Maggie, was in tears, pleading, “Why do you have to keep going away?” I responded, “Well, it’s my job.” While it is indeed my profession, there is always a choice to be made.
I felt it was necessary to speak with Steve face-to-face. I hold him in high regard and did not want to simply call him. I arrived just in time for the team meeting, where everyone was seated with their notebooks, dressed in the new purple England kit. I was still in the same attire I had on earlier, and Elliot Daly approached me, exclaiming, “What on earth do you look like? Have you been out duck stalking?” As they outlined the plans for the upcoming week against New Zealand, I turned to Steve and asked, “Could I have a moment of your time?” We moved to the bar to discuss the matter. He appeared taken aback and disappointed, yet he recognized that I had given it considerable thought. He then asked, “Don’t you want one more game? One last match against South Africa, you and Dan Cole.” In that moment, a small part of me considered it, but I was resolute in my decision.
On the Thursday night prior to the game, I reached out to Scott Robertson, the All Blacks coach. I had seen his interview on Sky Sports, where he mentioned that I could have expressed myself more clearly. Although he was out for dinner, he answered my call, and I wanted to clarify a few points. He responded, to which I replied, “I stand by my comments; I just wish to see more teams engaging, creating more drama and entertainment in that 90-second window before the game.”
This situation generated a narrative, as a retired player had inadvertently offended a nation. It was discussed on talk SPORT, leading some to think, “Perhaps I’ll tune in this weekend to see what this haka is all about.” It is all in good fun. The sport must learn to market itself more effectively. Consider boxing; the outrageous remarks made by Tyson Fury are often absurd, yet they draw attention.
