Nick Kyrgios has expressed high praise for fellow Australian tennis player:
Nick Kyrgios has expressed high praise for fellow Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur, declaring that he has the potential to win a Grand Slam during his career. Kyrgios shared a memorable moment from the past when he realized de Minaur’s talent, recalling a Davis Cup practice session when de Minaur was just 17. Despite bringing a beer out to the court with the intention of teaching de Minaur a lesson, Kyrgios was impressed by the young player’s skill, noting it was a close set and that de Minaur showed promise.
Kyrgios also highlighted de Minaur’s dedication to improving his game and described him as a "ridiculously good role model," praising his maturity and work ethic. Kyrgios further commended the strength of Australian men’s tennis, pointing to players like Alexei Popyrin and Jordan Thompson as part of a new golden era for the sport in Australia. He expressed excitement about the deep talent pool in Australian tennis, noting that players like Popyrin, with his dangerous serve, and Thompson, who has recently earned a seeding at a Grand Slam, are capable of making an impact at major tournaments.
Kyrgios, who is gearing up to face British player Jacob Fearnley in the first round of the Australian Open, added that the sport was becoming "a bit mundane" for him, which is why he is excited to be back on the court. He also reflected on the current strength of Australian tennis and the promising future of the country’s young talent.
Meanwhile, de Minaur will face Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round of the Australian Open, with a potential second-round match-up against either a qualifier or Argentina’s Federico Coria. Popyrin is set to play Frenchman Corentin Moutet, while Thompson faces a qualifier in his opening match.
