English cricketers have been encouraged by the players' union to participate in the Pakistan Super League draft scheduled for next month, despite the stringent limitations imposed on overseas franchise involvement by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Mail Sport has learned that the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) communicated with the governing body earlier this week, outlining their legal stance on various matters concerning the new regulations regarding No Objection Certificates (NOCs)—the official documents required for players to compete in international tournaments.
The PCA has requested that multi-format players who wish to enter the draft identify themselves in advance.
Earlier this month, the ECB announced a series of measures aimed at curbing the migration of domestic players during the English cricket season. These measures include the refusal of NOCs to players contracted to the 18 first-class clubs for any competitions occurring between April and September, with the exception of the Indian Premier League.
The Pakistan Super League, a tournament favored by English cricketers, now falls under this restriction following its rescheduling to April and May for 2025.
Numerous players expressed their outrage at the new regulations, which also prohibit participation in Twenty20 competitions that coincide with the Vitality Blast or The Hundred. In response, they established a private WhatsApp group to deliberate on their course of action, which may include legal action against the ECB for restraint of trade.
Nevertheless, the PCA believes that constructive discussions were held with the ECB prior to their legal correspondence, and contrary to earlier statements, players with white-ball specific contracts that include match fee payments for County Championship matches will be permitted to take part in the PSL.
Additionally, they have informed their members in an email circulated on Wednesday—reviewed by Mail Sport—that proposed restrictions on transitioning between winter tournaments running concurrently are under consideration.
