Promoter Frank Warren Defends Tyson Fury Against Shorts Allegations
Frank Warren dismissed allegations that Tyson Fury violated any regulations during his fight against Oleksandr Usyk on December 21. Fury experienced his first defeat to Usyk last May by a split decision and was unable to reclaim victory in their subsequent encounter. In a thrilling match held in Saudi Arabia, Fury lost with a unanimous score of 116-112 from all three judges, shattering his aspirations of taking the WBA, WBC, and WBO titles from his Ukrainian opponent.
Following the bout, a journalist raised concerns that Fury's shorts were worn too high, potentially violating International Boxing Association (IBA) guidelines. According to the IBA, shorts should be loose-fitting and extend to at least halfway down the thigh or no lower than the knees, with the waistband positioned to prevent strikes to the groin.
Promoter Frank Warren addressed these claims, labeling them as 'nonsense.' He noted that the referee had inspected Fury's attire in the dressing room prior to the fight and confirmed that it was compliant. Warren pointed out that there were no complaints from Usyk's camp regarding the shorts, stating, "Some individual who lacks knowledge about boxing is making these claims, and I find it utterly ridiculous."
Additionally, there were questions about whether Fury's facial hair complied with IBA regulations concerning beard length, as the 36-year-old sported a new look in Riyadh. The IBA stipulates that beards must not exceed 10 centimeters in length. Unlike the shorts issue, Usyk's team did contest the length of Fury's beard. However, Warren dismissed this concern as 'a non-issue' and 'complete nonsense.' It is important to note that Fury had been cleared by the relevant sanctioning bodies regarding both alleged rule violations before the fight.
