Tennis Commentary Interrupted by Sabalenka's Expletive Apology
A tennis commentator was compelled to issue an apology following a 'colorful' expletive used by tennis star Aryna Sabalenka during a post-match interview on Friday evening. The WTA World No. 1 secured a 1-0 victory against her friend Paula Badosa during the World League held in the United Arab Emirates.
In the live interview aired on Stan Sport, the Belarusian athlete discussed the Spanish term she employs to express her frustrations on the court. Standing next to the Spanish No. 1, Badosa, Sabalenka remarked, "I was merely showcasing my Spanish skills." She then directed her comments towards Badosa, stating, "It’s your fault. You need to teach me better words than p***," referring to a Spanish term for 'whore.'
Stan Sport commentator Robbie Koenig promptly intervened during the live broadcast, saying, "We apologize for the colorful language." Sabalenka has had a remarkable season on the WTA Tour, clinching 17 titles, including the Australian Open Women's singles and the US Open.
On Saturday, she returned to the court with Mirra Andreeva, and the duo triumphed over Jasmine Paolini and Simona Halep. Sabalenka has expressed her determination to maintain her position as the top women's player, having overtaken Iga Swiatek at the summit of the rankings in October. While competing in the UAE, she is also focused on securing her third consecutive Australian Open title in January. If successful, she would be the first woman to achieve this since Martina Hingis in 1999.
"You cannot be overly confident about that; it’s a mental aspect," she conveyed to The National when reflecting on her ability to retain the No. 1 ranking. "Naturally, I wish to remain there for as long as possible, and I am putting in significant effort towards that goal, so we shall see how the next season unfolds," she added. Additionally, Sabalenka has addressed Swiatek's recent positive doping test. The 23-year-old has completed a one-month suspension after testing positive in August for a prohibited substance, as stated by the International Tennis Integrity Agency.
