The federal appeals court in New York
Donald Trump has encountered a legal defeat as a federal appeals court affirmed a New York jury's ruling that found him liable in the E. Jean Carroll sexual abuse and defamation lawsuit. IN May, the civil jury determined that Trump was responsible for sexually assaulting Carroll in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman, a high-end department store in Manhattan, in 1996.
The jury, composed of six men and three women, also concluded that Trump defamed Carroll by labeling her a liar, resulting in a total damages award of $5 million. In its ruling on Monday, the appeals court stated that Trump "has not shown that the district court made any errors in the rulings he challenged."
The court noted that evidence, including Trump's comments about his sexual conquests in an "Access Hollywood" video that emerged during the 2016 presidential campaign, illustrated a "repeated, idiosyncratic pattern of conduct" that aligned with Carroll's claims.
The court further remarked: "Considering the overall record and the strength of Ms. Carroll's case, we are not convinced that any alleged error, or combination of errors, in the district court's evidentiary decisions impacted Mr. Trump's substantial right's ruling represents a significant setback for Trump, who has referred to the case as the "greatest witch hunt of all time" and criticized the jury's initial verdict as a "disgrace. “In another civil case, which Trump is also appealing, he was ordered to pay Carroll an enormous $83.3 million for defamation after he publicly denied the allegations of sexual abuse.
The recent ruling from the appeals court comes amid a series of legal challenges that have intensified for Trump since his relection in November. While his extensive legal troubles may not be fully resolved by the time he is sworn in on January 20th, significant progress is expected in each case.
