White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was hammered Friday with questions on why President Joe Biden wasn't speaking out ahead of a potential midnight government shutdown. 

Biden has kept a low profile in the aftermath of Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' election loss, with one prominent Democrat blasting him for 'quiet quitting.'

There have also been new questions raised about his cognitive abilities after The Wall Street Journal released a damning report Thursday suggesting that his decline started years ago. 

The president and his family returned to the White House last night after a mid-week trip to Wilmington, Delaware, to attend church services to mark the anniversary of the death of his first wife Neilia and baby daughter Naomi. 

It was Jean-Pierre who put out a statement Thursday night condemning Republicans - including President-elect Donald Trump - for blowing up a bipartisan deal to fund the government through the new year. 

During Friday's abridged 36-minute press briefing, Jean-Pierre fielded a number of questions asking why the American people weren't hearing directly from the president.

'We've heard that message from you, but why aren't we hearing that directly from the president? Why haven't we seen or heard from President Biden?' asked a reporter. 

Jean-Pierre answered that 'this is a strategy that we have done many times before.'
